How To Prepare For The Upcoming Winter Weather In Central Texas

Written by Extraco Banks | Jan 22, 2026 8:41:01 PM

Central Texas is expected to see a big temperature drop this weekend, with freezing conditions and potential ice that could make roads slick and impact normal routines. The National Weather Service has issued winter weather alerts for parts of the region, with difficult travel possible in some areas.

At Extraco Banks, we’re all about helping our neighbors feel prepared—so here are three easy things you can do in under 15 minutes.

1) Protect your home (and avoid expensive surprises)

A quick freeze can do real damage.

  • Cover outdoor faucets and wrap exposed pipes
  • Disconnect hoses and store them
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm air circulate

A few minutes now can help prevent frozen pipes and repairs later.

2) Prep for “just in case” banking access

If weather affects travel or power, you’ll want options.

  • Know your digital plan: We have many different ways you can access your accounts -- visit our Digital Banking webpage to learn more
  • Move your essentials: Keep your wallet, ID and any key documents in one easy-to-grab spot
  • Have a little cash on hand for small needs (gas, tips, food)—even a modest amount can help if outages disrupt card readers

3) Do the 5-minute vehicle + errand check

If ice shows up, the safest plan is often not driving.

  • Top off gas and knock out errands before temps drop
  • Keep a small kit in your car (blanket, charger, water/snacks, flashlight)
  • Avoid bridges/overpasses first—they freeze faster than roads

According to TXDot, Travel can get hazardous quickly when freezing rain or ice is in the mix.
